Easter157_The God Who Chases Us!

Gods Word Community Church

 Following Him to Calvary

The God Who Chases Us!

The last Gospel written, John's Gospel, writes the story no one else had written about why Jesus made his very last trip to Jerusalem. Friends living close to Jerusalem sent Jesus a message that a good friend, Lazarus, their brother, was dying of an illness. Jesus performs one of his greatest miracles in raising Lazarus from the dead, but the miracle provokes the religious leaders, and they make plans to execute him. When Jesus comes to Jerusalem from Lazarus's home, the people lay palm branches in front of him as he enters the city: "Hosanna!,' they say. They think he is their Messiah against the Romans, but his goal is higher: He has come to save all mankind from our sins. Jesus warns his disciples what is coming, that he is going to die, and it is the greatest thing for all mankind, but they resist him. Jesus then strengthens them with some of the richest teaching we know, and His Father's commands will guide them. Then, comes the cross.

2Th03_Looking to Eternity: Working in the Eternal Community

Gods Word Community Church

The Churches of the New Testament

Sermon on 2 Thessalonians 3

Looking to Eternity: Working in the Eternal Community:

In this last part of the second letter written to the Thessalonian church, Paul addresses a very strange topic. The Apostle appeals to the church members that are not working, causing scandals and living off of other members of the church. It appears the Thessalonians originally thought Jesus was coming back so soon they saw no reason to keep their jobs. The Apostle Paul lived very differently among them, working hard and providing for his own needs. But the love Paul has for these brothers and sisters shines through as he encourages them in their work for the gospel through all adversity.

2Th02_Looking to Eternity: God Saves From the Darkness

Gods Word Community Church

The Churches of the New Testament

Sermon on 2 Thessalonians 2

Looking to Eternity: God Saves From the Darkness:

In this chapter Paul reassures the panicked disciples of Thessalonica. They were afraid that they had missed the coming of the Lord. But, Paul tells them two things that must happen before Jesus returns, a great falling away and the coming of the man of sin. Both Jesus and the man of sin are said to be coming. Both have a gospel and both say that they alone should be worshiped. Paul then encourages the Thessalonians to stand firm in the face of these things. God speaks through the words of his messengers. Will you hear them and endure to the end?

Gods Word Community Church

The Churches of the New Testament

Sermon on 2 Thessalonians 1

Looking to Eternity: Judgment:

Paul and the disciples with him sent a second letter to the Thessalonian church to encourage them in the midst of their persecution. Paul reminds them that temptation and trials are common to all men, then and now. So why do modern day Christians believe our lives should be significantly easier once we believe in Jesus Christ? Paul shares with the Thessalonian church that through the difficulties of life we must not lose sight of Gods design to mature us.

1Th05b_The Conduct Concerns of a Good Church

Gods Word Community Church

The Churches of the New Testament

Sermon on 1 Thessalonians 5 b

The Conduct Concerns of a Good Church:

Paul’s final message to the church at Thessalonica focused on how we live with God, and how we treat one another. When you consider that non-believers at the time, like today, may not be the friendliest people, what he asks is a pretty tall order. As is always true, there was a ton of pressure to conform to the existing culture, as well as to Greek, Roman and other gods. Paul, instead, encourages us to live by faith lives of hope and love. These values change how we treat other believers and the people in our society. As we study this section, we can ask, what changes can we make to live in peace with the individuals in our society?

Gods Word Community Church

The Churches of the New Testament

Sermon on 1 Thessalonians 4-5 a

We Will Meet the Lord In the Air:

When we learn that the timing of the end of the world cannot be calculated – that God has made it that way – with that out of the way, can we learn the point that we need to be ready? When the Apostles talk about the end of the world and the return of Jesus Christ, when Jesus speaks about that day, the great question is not when, where, what… but how should we then live: Will we live so that whenever it is that He returns, before or after our own passing, we will be ready to receive Him in triumph, glory, honor, and praise? It is about being ready!
