The Visitors:

God has opened His arms to all people everywhere. What is He looking for from us? Close relationship. Worship. Trust. Obedience. We can go through our days without setting aside time with Him, but our lives shrink from wonder to the mundane without Him. The Shepherds and the Magi were willing to take the time to be with God, and they were filled with wonder and changed by being with Him. Today, the same challenge is before us all: Do we make time to know this loving God, who calls us, who loves us, who will draw us near and be eternal life to us, if we make the time for Him?

The Announcement:

When one looks at the Christmas story, so much of Who God is can be revealed to us. We know He is the Yahweh Who Remembers. We know He didn't want to leave us without hope. We know His righteousness, unlike ours, is full of mercy. We know He wanted us to give us a basis to believe, so 500 years earlier, He took a high priest with the same name as Our Savior, Joshua, or Jeshua, whom we call Jesus, put a joined crown of priest and king on his head, and said, “This crown will come to the One I am sending to you.”

In a culture of unlimited religious tolerance, we have forgotten that there are things God looks for in the His people. How do we live pleasing to God? In the first part of 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul tells the young Thessalonian church the kind of living God wants His people to do. This is a primer for the divine life.

Intervening For Each Other’s Spirits:

How often do we hear people in our culture say that their relationship with God is between them and Him? The culture created by Jesus and the Apostles is very different: We see a community that knows that each person needs support to walk faithfully with God. In Eph 1:16-19 Paul prayed in detail for the faith of the Ephesians. In Hebrews 3:13-14 he gives us responsibility to keep each other from drifting away. In 1 Thess 3, he intervened with changed plans to confirm the faith of his brothers and sisters.

What is Our Crown?:

How does our cultural style tame down our affection for one another? When do you think we quit letting others know how much we love them? What could we do to increase the expression of affection in our relationships with our brothers and sisters in the fellowship? How do we increase our expressions of love for each other so that each member of the community has a keen sense of being strongly attached, of knowing the love that his or her brothers or sisters have for each one.

What does a church look like when love and faith are truly working together? We’ve seen so many examples of the opposite, lack of trust and lack of affection. But, notice the peace and sweetness here, and ask yourself, how can we use this to watch how we are doing in the Lord?
